TALK - JUDY CHICAGO’S THE DINNER PARTY: THE MAKING OF Judy Chicago

In the context of the exhibition ‘The Materiality of Judy Chicago’ our Venice gallery is pleased to welcome you on 18 September at 6pm for the talk entitled Judy Chicago’s ‘The Dinner Party’: The Making Of. 

The talk will unfold as a conversation between Diane Gelon, who worked on The Dinner Party and helped to organize its worldwide, grass roots tour, and Francesco Spampinato, Director of the Second Cycle Degree in Visual Arts at Alma Mater Studiorum, University of Bologna.

The event will focus on the making of The Dinner Party, Judy Chicago’s most famous work, now part of the collection of the Brooklyn Museum. Drawing on Diane Gelon’s first-hand experience of the project, it will explore the five-year process behind the work, which brought together more than 400 people and involved a wide range of techniques and materials. 

The conversation will look at the collective and non-hierarchical approach to production that characterised the work, tracing its exhibition history and circulation from the 1970s through the 1990s, until its final acquisition by the Elizabeth A. Sackler, who donated it to the Brooklyn Museum in 2002.

Conceived as a symbolic history of women in Western civilization, with The Dinner Party Judy Chicago sought to bring women’s history to a wider audience at a time when the very idea that women had a history was still largely unacknowledged.
