EDMUND KALB Edmund Kalb

The Leopold Museum’s exhibition Edmund Kalb is the first presentation in a Vienna museum to afford comprehensive insights into the work of the artist Edmund Kalb (1900–1952). The astonishing oeuvre of this loner and lateral thinker is presented by means of 125 exhibits. Between 1926 and 1930 he created his main oeuvre comprising some 700 self-portraits
and around 400 portraits. During the 1920s and 30s, Kalb created a total of around 1,000 self-portraits, some 600 of which verifiably still exist today. Edmund Kalb painted self-portraits with watercolors or India ink, as well as using the technique of drypoint etching. In the late 1930s, the artist also explored dynamic abstraction. In this, there are parallels between him and Naum Gabo, Alexander Rodchenko as well as further exponents of the Russian avant-garde.
